When DJ Sir J. sat down to have a conversation with a fellow DJ friend, he realized that there weren’t a lot of big things going on in Dallas, TX when it came to Christian hip-hop. He felt like he had to travel or look at other cities for CHH events, like SXSW, Flavor Fest, Passion, Impact, etc. There was nothing wrong with these events and where they were taking place, but Sir J. wanted something in his own city.

That conversation with his friend sparked an idea on how to change what was going on. Instead of hosting a concert, conference or a party – Sir J. decided to host a cypher. He came up with “The Summer’s Cypher 2016.” A cypher in which Sir J. says was done for two reasons.

“I wanted to showcase to the world the amount of talent we have within the body, but particularly in my city, Dallas, TX,” Sir J. said. “Secondary to that, I set out to unite the dope rappers with the dope photographers, videographers, business owners, and organizations of our city.”

For the cypher, Sir J. also had a network event after the video shoot. He teamed up with sponsors that supported the project, and helped artists and businesses connect afterwards. Many of the sponsors logos are found throughout the video.

“Everybody wanted to be apart it, so I took advantage of the time together, catered it, took an hour after the shoot for everyone to eat and exchange business cards and just network,” Sir J. said. “My hope was that more projects would stem from relationships built at that shoot.”

When it came to the emcees Sir J. wanted to be a part of the cypher, he wanted a dynamic group of artists who would be able to deliver hard-hitting bars. He wanted to make a statement, and said “I couldn’t have asked for a better group.”

“Street Hymns, ShySpeaks, Adrion Butler, Princeton Marcellis, and Steve O is a squad,” he added. “There are so many representations in this group. From a female emcee, to battle rapper, to Christian rapper, rapper that’s Christian, conscious rap, the list goes on and on.”

Sir J. admits that they not only set the stage for his next line-up, but they also put the pressure on it. He hopes to continue hosting cyphers, as he has his next potential line-up in mind.

“In terms of my intentions with the cyphers,” he noted. “I’ve always intended for this to grow as a cypher series. I’m currently planning for the next cypher, “The Winter’s Cypher 2016,” in a different city.”

What is your favorite line? Who do you want in the line-up for Sir J.’s next cypher?
