On Sunday afternoon, August 14, the world learned that Nelson Chu, aka DJ Official, had passed away due to complications from a recent double lung transplant. The legendary producer for Cross Movement, Reach Records, and others was only 39 years old.

The sad news comes just weeks after the Cross Movement (the group he was a part of) was honored for their role as Christian hip hop pioneers at the Legacy Conference in Chicago, IL. DJ Official, or “Fish” as he is sometimes called, was not in attendance for that event but instead Tweeted that he had been called for his transplant.

That ultimately didn’t go through but another donor was located shortly after. At 10:03 p.m. on July 29 he Tweeted “Go time!” indicating he was about to go into surgery.

A few days later his family shared reports that Chu was placed in a medically-induced coma he apparently couldn’t shake.

This was the latest in a series of medical issues (including rare forms of cancer and emphysema) that forced him to retire from his life as a touring DJ with artists like Lecrae, Andy Mineo, and Trip Lee.

Prior to this latest transplant, a YouCaring fund was created to collect online financial gifts to his family and is still open to donations.

DJ Official was a Grammy-Award winning producer, who was a stable within the Christian hip hop scene. Prior to deejaying for Reach Records, he produced and DJ’ed for The Cross Movement.

In 2009, he released his Entermission album, which included features from Lecrae, Thi’sl, Sho Baraka, Swift, Tedashii, Json and many others.

In 2010, DJ Official was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in his bone marrow. The illness forced him to retire from touring in 2014.

Earlier this year, he shared a link on his social media page to a preview of the album he was working on prior to getting sick. His hope, if a transplant was available and the surgery would go well, he would be able to update and possibly complete the project.

Chu leaves behind his wife Teresa and two young daughters. Please keep them in your prayers.
