Pray or Work

At one point in time, I do feel that most of us have had at least 1 of these statements, or something close to it go through our mind about someone we know or just something we thought. “I know you couldn’t pay your rent again this month…You told me about that Algebra class you are struggling in…We need more new Christians in the body…I really want to hear better music…I know you don’t have the money to get your baby some formula…There sure are a lot of homeless people…We’ve talked about your struggle with lying…You told me before about the times you’ve had sex even after you said you would stop…When it comes to my marriage, I don’t want it to end in divorce…I want better ministries at my church…We should be better role models for younger children…” All I’m supposed to do is pray about these things, right? Wrong!

God does want us to come to Him in prayer and talk to Him. Prayer is a powerful tool that often times as Christians, we fail to use. I understand that, but the problem comes in when that’s all we ever use. What if only Abraham prayed and never left where he was to go to Canaan? (Gen. 12:1-4) What if Esther only prayed for the people’s deliverance and not went in to see the king? (Esther 5:1-3) What if the good Samaritan only prayed for the man on the side of the road and not helped him get back to good health? (Luke 10: 25-37) What if Paul only prayed for the churches of Corinth, Galatia, Colossi, Rome, Phillipia, Thessolonica and not wrote letters or visited them? (see 3/4 of the New Testament) What if only Jesus prayed and never gave His life for our salvation? (John 19)

We were in such a desperate situation that we had to have blood to cover us. Who’s in a desperate situation you know that needs some action to be taken in their lives? Who needs you to pray with them? Who needs you to help them rebuild their lives? What child needs you as a mentor? Who needs you to lead them to Christ? What church needs your ideas to build a more effective ministry? Who needs you as an accountability partner? Who needs your abilities to feed the homeless? What group needs you to be willing to donate a few dollars to help single mothers? Luke 6:31 says “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Last time I checked, do was an action.

I know that God can do supernatural things just because of prayer. Don’t think for 1 second I’m saying that God needs us to do something to aid Him do what He’s capable of doing without us. I’m saying that there are many of us within the Body of Christ that only rely on prayer to get manual labor done. We need to pray first, then get to work.
