No One Loves You More than God
Have you ever thought about how much God loves you? I’ve always described it as the most love you could desire bestowing on someone times 1,000. Even then, I’m not sure we’d match God’s love. The Apostle Paul described God’s love like this:
Romans 5:6-8 (English Standard Version)
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
As I read verse 7 of the above passage, I thought about how many people in my life I’d die for. Best case scenario, I came up with 10 people. All of them were family and close friends. And yes, I think that’s a lot.
But let’s just give me the benefit of the doubt and say that I would take a bullet for all 10. That is nothing compared to what God did for us.
He came in form of a man, Jesus Christ, not to die for so called nice people or people who He counted as righteous, but he died for people who said they loved Him, yet failed to keep his commandments. These same people who sinned repeatedly, supposedly repented, and yet kept right on sinning.
People who cheated on their taxes, lied to their spouses, fornicated and failed to love their friends and enemies. These people were horrible! Yet, these people were you and I. (John 3:16-17)
The first part of Romans 6:23 says “the wages of sin is death.” Therefore, we deserve death or eternal separation from God for everything we have done wrong in the eyesight of God. Instead of leaving us stuck with repaying that penalty, God came to the earth in the form of man. His name was Jesus and His mission was to pay the wage for our sins via His death on the cross and subsequent resurrection.
How great a love is that? He died for us – the people who were in direct opposition to Him. He didn’t just help us out. He died for us! God died for the ungodly.
I think about this in the context of Valentine’s Day and I’m just blown away. Sure, it’s a great day to appreciate your spouse, your parents and anyone else who loves you. Trust me, I love the aforementioned people and I know they love me. But no one loves you more than God. Let’s not take Him out of yet another Holiday.
